When Leaders Leave
Whether itâs the owner of the company or someone in another leadership position, itâs complicated and problematic when leaders leave. When a member of the Leadership Team exits, it should be handled with the utmost respect and care for the remaining team. Clarify to their subordinates who they will report to, even if temporarily.
It is a mistake to replace a Leadership Team member with an unqualified employee from within your company to simply fill the gap. Refer to The Hiring Process before posting the open position. While itâs recommended to first post the job opening internally, it is unlikely that your company is loaded with leaders ready to make the move to your C-Suite. Remember that just as your company has a culture, your Leadership Team does as well. Itâs vital to keep the culture and trust in place, especially during the transition.
The debate on whether leadership can be taught is for another day. What should be clear is that you promote those qualified and experienced to leadership positions. This mistake can result in more people exiting, a lack of accountability, or micromanagement. All are detrimental to your culture and team.
Keep in mind that leaders have access to more information than the rest of your team. Be smart about how you remove access and create a successful Transition Plan, understanding that the exiting team member may no longer have the companyâs best interest in mind. While they may not intentionally cause harm, they are now invested in a future that doesnât include working for you. Even when parting on good terms, be sure to create a Transition Plan that includes healthy boundaries and oversight.
